Contact Station
In 2005, the Department of Forest
Parks and Recreation (DFP&R) decided to replace the old green trailer
that had served as a temporary contact station at the Green River Reservoir
State Park for 3 years. The Friends of the Green River Reservoir and DFP&R
had extensive discussions about how to best meet the need...
for a permanent and
long-term solution for a proper contact station taking into consideration
budgetary constraints. The design, construction and funding of the contact
station is a great example of the collaborative efforts between the Friends
of the Green River Reservoir, the DFP&R and The Cushman Design Group, Inc.
The new contact station
was completed in 2007 and is located on the left side of the access drive.
It was designed by The Cushman Design Group, Inc. and built by local contractor
Tell Gregory. Lumber for the timber frame porch and the building's rafters
came from M.B. Heath & Sons in North Hyde Park. Dark brown stained
siding...
and a dark asphalt
roof help to tuck the building naturally into the wooded site thus meeting
the Green River Reservoir Viewshed Overlay District bylaws.
From the interior room, rangers greet and check in visitors. Inside there
is space to store visitor contact materials such as...
maps, nature guides
and other dry goods. There is a small gas refrigerator to keep water samples
and food cool. Counters provide the rangers with computer and writing work
stations. Overall, the building size is 12 ft. by 21 ft. with a 9 ft. by
12 ft. porch and a 12 ft. by 12 ft. enclosed room. The porch provides cover
for a small...
4 person picnic table
and a visitor check in window. Eastern White Pine boards were used for
the interior paneling and trim. The building was wired in such a way that
future photo-voltaic panels and an inverter will be able to be hooked up
providing off the grid lighting and computer power.
